It was a split decision for The Master’s University swim teams Saturday in its first ever home meet, with the men’s team defeating Concordia University Irvine and the women’s team falling to the NCAA Division II Eagles.
The men won 11 events and set two team records on their way to the victory, with the women getting three individual wins and a pair of personal bests.
“Really proud of the team today and being able to get this historic win for the program,” said TMU Head Coach Curren Bates. “Being able to compete at this level on our home turf meant a lot and really speaks to how much depth the team has this year.”
Tyler LeDet and Desmond Sutanto each won three events, with LeDet breaking the record in the 200 Backstroke and Sutanto setting a new mark in the 200 Breaststroke.
Other event wins went to Nilton Dos Santos de Oliveira, J.D. Torres, David Kugler, Dylan Crane, Michael Loughboro and Freddie Cole.
“With this win we are also currently ranked first in conference and fourth nationally across dual and championship formats,” Bates said. “We have really put a target on our back going into our mid-season meet, which will be a good challenge for us to execute on.”
On the women’s side of the dual meet, Kylee Sears won two events and Camryn Bussey took the top spot in a third. Both Johanna Busk and Cassandra O’Connor had season-bests in the 200 Breaststroke.
“We had a very strong showing against a very good CUI women’s team,” Bates said. “We were able to take a couple event wins and improve our competitive standing across NAIA programs.”
The Master’s will get three weeks off before traveling to Aliso Viejo on Nov. 11 for the Wyatt Balman Invitational hosted by Soka University.
“Being on the tail end of over a month straight of training and racing, I am really happy with how everyone is swimming,” Bates said. “We have had too many in-season best times to list, and have really put ourselves on the map for the NAIA national rankings.”
